Four Wednesday workshops Jan.-April 2006!
January 25
Words, Words, Words: the building blocks of
writing
In this workshop we will play word games in order to explore the
importance of developing a strong vocabulary. After 20-25 minutes
of playing we will have a short discussion.
February 22
Analyzing hip hop lyrics: exploring, rhyme,
rhythm and flow
In this workshop we will analyze a hip hop song in order to explore
how words are strung together to make poetry. After a short discussion,
the girls will be split up into groups to transcribe and analyze
a song. One member of each group will present the group’s
findings.
March 29
Curtain’s Up: writing and theater
In this workshop we will read a short play together. The girls
will be divided into groups and will have to stage an act of
the play based on their reading and interpretation.
April 26
Writing and revising a story
In this workshop we will write a story collectively. Each participant
will write one sentence and pass the text on to the next. The next
person will read the previous sentence and write her own. We will
read the story out loud, split up into groups and edit the story.
Each group should come up with something different based on the
discussion. The only rule is that no sentence can be omitted, though
any sentence can be changed. When we reconvene, a representative
of each smaller group will read the different stories.

| To introduce the Cinnamongirls
to writing as a form of communication beginning with its most
basic building blocks. Through the experience of analyzing
and interpreting other people’s writing, the girls should
come to understand its power and its different forms. Finally,
by collectively creating and editing a story of their own,
the Cinnamongirls will learn that the process of writing can
be fun and rewarding. |
