Three-day event to inspire community residents around a summer of
good reading
Whether
it is becoming engrossed in murky mystery, becoming enthralled in
a romance novel or simply taking in the scholarly advice from a
self-help book; children, teens, and adults across East Oakland
are being invited to attend the communities’ first book fair
this June, “To Succeed, You Must Read.”
Slated from June 29-July 1, Oakland residents will be treated to
a grand kick off event Wednesday, June 29th, 4-7:30pm
with family focused activities, including reading activities and
book sampling, food, games and more. The event will be hosted at
the East Oakland Youth Development Center (EOYDC), 8200
International Blvd. The Book Fair will continue, Thursday,
June 30th and Friday, July 1st, from 4-7:30pm each day.
As part of their community service project, Cinnamongirls aim to
get kids (and adults) excited about reading more this summer. The
girls have created great incentives to achieve their goal, such
as reading agreements that serve to motivate kids to make a reading
commitment this summer, a formal recognition ceremony in the fall
for kids who adhere to their promise of reading, and a fun family
event to kick-off the kids’ commitment of summer reading.
The African American Museum and Library will be on hand to inform
residents of their services and sign up library cards. Community
and business leaders and Police and Fire department personnel are
also encouraged to participate in this unprecedented event.
Your help and patronage is needed, too!
There will be a variety of books for all ages, including scholastic
reading level books, ethnic books, biographies, Christian books,
Lemony Snicket, Series of Unfortunate Events, adult books, etc.
And, because it is anticipated that a number of children unable
to purchase a book at the fair, the girls are asking for donations,
of any amount, to supplement book costs for those children in need.
Please send donations to Cinnamongirl, Inc., P.O. Box 27297,
Oakland, 94602, Educational Fund (written on your
check’s memo section) or our donation page at Just
Give.org. Your contribution will help hundreds of children
make a commitment to read more this summer.
The book fair is the Cinnamongirls’ community service project
that serves to exercise the Cinnamongirls leadership skills, heighten
their awareness of service and empower our girls to ignite change
within their communities.
