Cinnamongirl Kick-off Meeting

- This meeting will kick off Cinnamongirl’s sixth year! We will review the Cinnamongirl program and the expectations we have for each participant. Parents are expected to attend.
Cinnamongirl Mentor Garden Party

- Our newest mentors will join Cinnamongirl’s returning mentors for a relaxing get-together just prior to kicking off the program year. Mentors will also have the opportunity to give feedback about the activities planned for the Cinnamongirls.
College Success Series: Preparing for the Admissions Process
Wednesday, September 23rd
4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
- As our first workshop for the 2009-2010 program year, CGI hosts a college night. University administrators and college students discuss what type of preparation is necessary to be competitive in the college admissions process. Parents and Cinnamongirls (and their friends) may attend this informative event.
UNCF 25th Annual Walk for Education
Saturday, September 26th
8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Cinnamongirls will join the United Negro College Fund, the nation’s largest and most successful comprehensive minority higher education assistance organization, for the 25th Annual Walk for Education. This 5K walk around Lake Merritt will be followed by an afternoon of food and entertainment. Girls will volunteer to help make this event possible.

Cinnamongirl Empowerment Retreat
Friday, October 2nd – October 4th
- During this overnight retreat, a series of activities are planned to encourage healthy relationships between the girls and the mentors. In addition to forging friendships, the girls will engage in discussions and activities to help them understand and develop their leadership potential.
Cinnamongirl Investment Club — Part 1 of 6: The Basics.
Saturday, October 10th

- Cinnamongirls will learn the basics of spending and saving, including a tutorial on the benefits and pitfalls of credit cards and the proper use and function of checking and savings accounts.
Passport Book Club
Saturday, October 17th

- Cinnamongirl, Inc. is proud to introduce Passport, a book club just for our participants. Literature is a passport to other times, cultures, and ideas. Through reading and discussion, Cinnamongirls explore both their own communities and the world. As readers, the girls learn about lives of great people, both well-known and little known. The purpose of the club is to have fun and, in addition, to experience compassion and empathy, increase knowledge and awareness and to be inspired. By learning to listen to the voices of others, one finds the freedom to find her own. This year’s books are Long Walk to Freedom: the Autobiography of Nelson Mandela and Led by Faith: Rising from the Ashes of the Rwandan Genocide.
So you think you can Dance?

- Cinnamongirls and mentors get a lesson with a dance instructor. This activity will help build the girls’ self esteem as they explore a different and creative way to express themselves.

Fall Newsletter Distribution
Cinnamongirl Service Discussion
Wednesday, November 4th

The girls will be presented a community service idea and will decide how best to execute the service as a group. The Cinnamongirl Service Project expands the Cinnamongirls’ leadership abilities, project management and teamwork skills. Most importantly, Cinnamongirls learn how they can make a difference through service. All follow-up meetings about executing this project will be announced.
Cinnamongirl Fundraiser: Letter Writing Campaign

- Cinnamongirls write letters to family members, friends, and businesspeople requesting their support of our program. All Cinnamongirls are expected to attend.
**Night at the Opera: Othello
Thursday, November 5th
6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
- Cinnamongirls have the wonderful opportunity to attend the final dress rehearsal of Shakespeare’s play, Othello, performed by the SF Opera at the San Francisco Opera House. This exclusive viewing is open to high school students only. 8 Cinnamongirls will attend this event with 2 mentors.
Cinnamongirl Investment Club — Part 2 of 6: Fundamentals of Investing.

- Cinnamongirls will learn the fundamentals and principles of investing, including information on financial markets, various financial instruments, how those instruments are traded, various asset classes and sub strategies.
Madly In Love with Me

- Author and inspirational catalyst, Christine Arylo, talks about love and relationships - with an underlying message of
self-love. Arylo is author of Choosing Me Before We and founder of the “Madly In Love With Me” movement, celebrated
by women across the world.

The Souls of Black Girls Documentary Screening & Discussion

- The Souls of Black Girls is a provocative news documentary that takes a critical look at media images and examines the relationship between the historical and existing media images of women of color and raises the question of whether they may be suffering from a self-image disorder as a result of trying to attain the standards of beauty that are celebrated in media images.

- Our guest speaker, Amanda Williams, is an outstanding visual artist. She is passionate about developing strategies that can use art and architecture as catalysts for the economic, community, and cultural revitalization of urban neighborhoods Williams earned her Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and now owns her own art studio in Oakland, CA.

- The personal statement is one of the most important components of the college application process, and perhaps the most difficult. What are they really looking for? What will help you stand out from the rest? University administrators give the inside scoop and work with Cinnamongirls to construct a personal statement. Cinnamongirls of all ages are encouraged to attend.
